Who we are

The Healthcare Continuum portfolio is a major initiative of the European Innovation Council (EIC) Pathfinder Challenge, launched in 2022 with the ambitious goal of fundamentally transforming healthcare. It seeks to shift from an episodic, symptom-triggered model to a continuous, proactive system. This strategic transformation aims to integrate unobtrusive, continuous health monitoring technologies with proactive diagnostic and treatment approaches. At the core of this vision is the development of novel, non-intrusive sensor solutions that enable life-long health status monitoring and support predictive medicine. These technologies are designed to match the precision of invasive methods while significantly reducing the burden on patients. In 2023, nine projects were selected to shape this portfolio. These projects began between July 2023 and January 2024, with durations of up to 48 months, and are supported by a total EU contribution of approximately €32 million.

The overarching objectives for the technologies developed within this portfolio are both ambitious and comprehensive. Each project is tasked with developing novel devices, instruments, or complete systems that enable unobtrusive, proactive healthcare. These innovations are expected to support lifelong health status monitoring and incorporate elements of predictive medicine, all grounded in robust scientific evidence. At the heart of this strategic shift is the seamless integration of continuous, unobtrusive health monitoring technologies with proactive diagnostic and treatment approaches.

To support all projects sharing similar goals and addressing common challenges, the partners collaboratively developed a unified strategic plan for the Healthcare Continuum portfolio. This plan was created through a bottom-up, multi-step process involving the project consortia, the EIC Programme Manager (PM), and Project Officers (POs). It began with structured group discussions to identify key needs and priorities across the portfolio. These insights were then consolidated during a plenary session and refined through a voting process, resulting in a shared set of priorities to guide collective action.

As a result, four Thematic Working Groups (WGs) were established—Regulatory Affairs and Ethics, Knowledge Sharing and Communication, Technology Innovation Transition, and IP and Commercial Exploitation. Each group operates with a clearly defined vision, mission, and set of strategic objectives and activities. Representatives from all nine projects participate, ensuring alignment and a shared sense of purpose. The strategic plan is reviewed and updated annually to reflect evolving priorities and progress.
